Roots&Shoots

One of JGIN Nepal’s flagship initiatives is the Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Program, a youth-led movement inspired by Dr. Goodall’s global network. Originally introduced in Nepal in 2008 and adopted as a core program of JGIN in 2013, Roots & Shoots empowers young people to become active changemakers in their communities. The program currently partners with seven schools-five in the Kathmandu Valley and two in Madhesh Province-fostering respect, empathy, and responsibility toward animals, people, and the environment. Students participate in diverse hands-on activities such as sparrow nest-building workshops to support urban biodiversity, waste segregation and vermicomposting workshops to promote sustainable waste management, seed bombing and kitchen gardening to encourage local food production, educational visits to animal sanctuaries and bird watching, . The program also hosts expert-led sessions, documentary screenings, and student-led fundraising initiatives, including support for the Roots & Shoots library. Youth members take part in global awareness campaigns such as No Waste November, World Peace Day, and Jane at 90, connecting local actions to international movements. A significant milestone for the program has been the inauguration of the first Roots & Shoots library in a government school in Mahottari, creating a dedicated space for learning, creativity, and environmental education.

Traveling Theater

Vultures and their habitats, conservation efforts by the communities in the places we travelled were the focus and highlight of the trip we, CYF: Life Vision Academy students and Roots & Shoots Nepal took in February, 2023.

To The Roots

JGIN’s nature immersion and expedition-based learning program “TO THE ROOTS”, which provides children with opportunities to connect deeply with the natural world. Through guided expeditions, participants experience local lifestyles, share meals prepared in traditional ways, and learn the value of manual work and self-reliance. These experiences are designed to build resilience, respect for rural communities, and a practical understanding of sustainable living. By stepping outside conventional classrooms, children develop a stronger emotional bond with nature and a deeper appreciation for the labor and knowledge that sustain local ecosystems and cultures.
