Empowering Young Conservationists: JGI Nepal's Innovative Approach to Dolphin Conservation

In the vibrant district of Bardia, Nepal, a remarkable conservation initiative is taking shape through the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) Nepal’s Roots & Shoots program. Launched in 2016, this groundbreaking project combines youth empowerment with dolphin conservation, creating a new generation of environmental stewards dedicated to protecting the endangered Ganges River Dolphin.

Local Youth Leading the Way

The program strategically selected four pioneering schools – BBAS Boarding School, Janata U Ma V, Shree Ne Ra Ni Ma V, and Tribhuvan Ni Ma V – based on their proximity to dolphin habitats and JGI Nepal’s working station. This initial phase marks the beginning of an ambitious plan to expand to 30 schools, creating a network of young conservationists throughout the region.

A Comprehensive Approach to Conservation

What sets this program apart is its holistic approach to conservation education. The initiative combines hands-on learning experiences with community engagement, featuring:

  • Field visits to dolphin habitats where students gain firsthand experience observing and understanding these magnificent creatures
  • Environmental action projects, including the innovative “Roots & Shoots Garbage Bins” initiative to combat river pollution
  • Sustainable agriculture programs teaching organic farming methods to reduce chemical runoff into river systems
  • Tree adoption and plantation projects to protect riverine ecosystems
  • Youth-led awareness campaigns that empower students to become conservation ambassadors

Making Conservation Education Engaging

The program utilizes various innovative teaching techniques to keep young conservationists engaged:

  1. Interactive hands-on activities that bring conservation concepts to life
  2. Educational games that make learning about environmental issues fun and memorable
  3. Community collaboration projects that connect students with local experts and stakeholders
  4. Regular field trips to dolphin habitats for real-world learning experiences
  5. Leadership development workshops that prepare students to become environmental champions

Looking Forward

As the program continues to grow, JGI Nepal’s Roots & Shoots initiative stands as a shining example of how empowering young people can create lasting change in conservation efforts. By combining education with action, the program is not just protecting dolphins – it’s nurturing the next generation of environmental leaders who will carry forward the mission of conservation.
